Sensei Richard Amuzu started karate in his early teens with the late Shihan Cyril Cummins 8th dan at Birmingham & Halesowen Shotokan Karate Club taking his 1st dan grading in 1990 under the legendary Master Keinosuke Enoeda within the KUGB/JKA. During this time he was lucky enough to train with a number of renowned karate-ka including Senseis Masao Kawasoe, Yoshinobu Ohta, Steve Cattle, Frank Brennan, Andy Sherry and Terry O’Neil.
He continued to train with Sensei Cummins until leaving for University where upon the recommendation of Sensei Cummins he trained under Sensei Geoffrey Stansfield at the Coventry Shotokan School of Karate, returning to train with Sensei Cummins during the university holiday periods.
Upon completion of his degree, Richard took a job in Nottingham and moved there initially training with Sensei John Dornan 3rd dan at Trent Shotokan Karate Club within the KUGB. After a break in training Richard restarted training with Sensei Aidan Trimble 7th dan at The Dojo club with the FSK.
He took and passed his 2nd dan grading under Sensei Trimble in 2008 before a change of job brought him back to Birmingham where he returned to BHSKC. passing his 3rd dan grading under Shihan Cummins in 2012 and his 4th dan in 2017 within NAKMAS. He continued to regularly train with Shihan Cummins until his death in 2017. Richard was responsible for the maintenance of the BHSKC web and social media sites for Shihan Cummins and is still involved with those to this day. In 2018 Richard became a licenced instructor and started teaching at the club. Richard took his 5th Dan grading under Sensei Peter Manning 8th Dan in 2022 as part of Enso Shotokan Karate Club where he trains under Sensei Austin Birks 6th Dan within the TSKA and is continuing to teach at Birmingham & Weoley Castle Shotokan Karate (BWCSK) helping to continue the clubs legacy and pass on what he has learnt to a new generation of students.
